Steel shelving & fixtures / Austin

Steel shelving for tight Austin spaces.

We’re Zunbik, a small fabrication studio in Austin. We make custom steel shelving, compact fixtures and small frames for homes, studios, shops and workspaces. Send us the dimensions and what the piece must carry; we check the brief before returning a written scope.

Price basis: reviewed dimensions, steel and finish, fixing conditions and fabrication time. A written quote follows review; this site does not set a binding price.

Read the room before drawing the piece

01 / Working principle
Start with the span, the wall, and what the piece must carry.
Zunbik / Dimensions before fabrication

A narrow space is not just a width on a sketch. A shelf can fit between two walls and still foul a door. A frame can sit level when empty and move under the way it is actually used.

We make compact steel work for tight Austin spaces. The useful starting point is the place, not a product code.

The workshop's approach

02 / Small work, defined scope

Steel storage fabrication for the room you have.

Choose the closest starting point. A storage wall and a display frame ask different questions, even when both are made from steel. Each service is scoped by enquiry, not ordered from a basket.

Steel section, joint layout and finish belong in the scope. A heavier-looking piece is not automatically the right answer for a thin wall or a narrow walkway.

01A

Measured steel shelving

Wall-mounted or freestanding storage with the working span and intended contents written down. Useful space matters more than a nominal shelf width.

01B

Compact workspace fixtures

Narrow benches, rails and practical storage pieces. Built around the task and the clearance left for the person doing it.

Fixture scope
01C

Small steel frames

Open frames for a defined surface or display. The support arrangement is checked separately from the top that will sit on it.

Repair and alteration

An existing steel piece that needs a change or a condition check. The first decision is whether the material can sensibly be worked on.

03 / The check before the cut

The steel is straight. Is the opening?

Dimensional check / Before fabricationRecord actual conditions
Tape measure and square on a raw steel edge
Span / mm
Measure between the intended supports. Overall width alone does not describe the unsupported length.
Depth / mm
Include the working edge. Check what can project into the room without catching a person or an opening door.
Load / kg
Describe the contents and where their weight sits. A concentrated load is not an evenly filled shelf.
Measurement study / Not a load rating

The common failure is a rough width treated as a finished specification. Wall build-up and support spacing can change the answer before the first cut. If the fixing point is unknown, the answer is not ready.

04 / From enquiry to scope

The quote follows the drawing, not the other way around.

For custom steel work near Austin, the useful first exchange is a brief that can be checked. We do not turn an unverified sketch into a promise about price or timing.

Read the enquiry process
  1. Send the dimensions

Give the overall space and the piece you want to use in it. Add your intended load, any known obstruction and the date you are working toward. Mark estimates as estimates.

  2. Check the conditions

Before a scope is settled, we identify what still needs measuring or inspecting. A photograph can explain access; it cannot establish the strength of a concealed fixing surface.

  3. Receive a written scope

The proposed work and its price basis are put in writing after review. Steel choice, finish and the fixing arrangement affect the quote. An enquiry receipt is not acceptance of a job.

  4. Arrange the next step

Any further check and the proposed schedule are discussed against the actual scope. Fabrication and installation responsibilities must be agreed before work proceeds. There is no fixed turnaround stated on this site.

05 / Steel load sizing

Put a number to the intended load.

Use this planning tool to express your intended load per square metre. It helps compare how much weight you want to place over a given footprint. It does not calculate how much steel can safely carry.

300–2400 mm

150–900 mm

1–8 mm / Recorded, not used in formula

5–500 kg

Input ranges are tool limits, not service capacities.

Why ask for thickness? It belongs in a steel brief, but thickness alone does not establish capacity. The tool records it without using it to inflate or reduce the result.

The example uses a 1200 mm span, 400 mm depth and 60 kg intended load. Its area is 0.48 m²; 60 divided by 0.48 is 125 kg/m². Change the inputs to describe your own piece.

Same weight, different problem

A 60 kg load spread over the full surface differs from 60 kg resting on a small machine foot. This formula reports an average. Describe point loads or movement in your enquiry rather than treating the average as a design approval.

Keep the result with the brief

Include your input dimensions and intended load in the specification field below. For wall mounted steel shelving, the wall construction still needs checking. See the measured shelving scope for that service's requirements.

06 / Where a check cannot be skipped

A rough measurement is not a specification.

Have a sketch rather than a drawing? That is enough to start a conversation. We can identify the unanswered questions before a scope is settled. We will not guess a fixing point or promise a load from a photograph alone.

This service is for compact fabrication and practical alterations. It is not a substitute for structural engineering certification or a general building contract. If the job depends on either, that requirement has to be resolved separately.

Read the written-scope terms

07 / Start the work on paper

Send the dimensions. We will tell you what still needs checking.

Tell us what the piece is for and where it will go. You do not need a finished drawing to ask about small space steel furniture or a practical storage change.

What needs making?

Name and permission to handle your enquiry are required. Add either a phone number or an email address so we can reply.

One reply route is needed. Neither phone nor email is required on its own.

Add this only if the location or access affects the work.

Use mm and kg if possible, or write the units beside each number. Include the calculator inputs if you used it. Mark any measurement that still needs checking.

Describe the intended use and any access restriction. Do not include payment details or sensitive personal information.

An enquiry starts a review. It is not an order or a binding quote.
