Measured steel shelving / Austin

Steel shelving starts with the load.

Zunbik makes custom steel shelving in Austin for homes, studios and small workspaces. Wall-mounted or freestanding, each piece is planned around its span and the things you actually store.

Price basis: reviewed dimensions, material, finish, fixing conditions and fabrication time. A written quote follows review, not a stock shelf price.

The service boundary

Measured steel shelving is storage fabrication, not a structural engineering service. Shelf layout and support conditions belong in the same brief. Installation arrangements and any further checks are identified in the written scope rather than assumed to be included.

The piece we plan

Make the space useful, not just full.

A shelf that fills a recess but will not accept the box it was made for is the wrong shelf. Workshop shelving design begins with the stored item, then works back to the support.

Measured steel shelving can use steel shelf surfaces or a steel support assembly with a separately specified surface. The choice affects edge height and the clear space between levels. A folded steel edge can stiffen a surface but also reduce the opening beneath it. That loss matters when a container only just fits.

Tell us whether the shelf holds books, loose tools or containers with small feet. A load spread across the whole surface behaves differently from the same weight sitting in one spot. Steel thickness by itself does not answer that question. The support spacing and section shape matter too.

Overall envelope
Available width, maximum depth and total height, with units stated. Distinguish a wall opening from the finished piece's outside dimensions.
Clear span
The distance between supports. A long overall shelf with an intermediate support is not the same brief as an uninterrupted span.
Storage opening
The clear height between shelf levels and the usable depth behind any front lip or rail. Measure the largest item, including its handle.
Material and finish
Steel section and shelf construction selected after review. State the intended environment and finish preference; a raw steel appearance is not a corrosion specification.
Load and supports
Intended weight per level, where it sits, wall or floor information and any restraint needs. Unknown conditions remain open questions, not assumed capacities.

For a commercial shelving enquiry, add how stock is moved. Sliding a container onto a shelf is different from setting it down gently, and a customer-facing edge needs a different discussion from a shelf that only holds closed cartons. Steel storage fabrication in Austin need not become a whole-room fit-out. A well-defined storage run is enough to start.

Wall mounted steel shelving

A fixing plate is only half the connection.

The other half is the wall. A painted surface does not tell us what is behind it, where a sound fixing can go or whether a service runs through the proposed location.

For wall mounted steel shelving, identify the wall construction where known and show the surrounding area. Do not drill exploratory holes just to complete an enquiry. If the backing or substrate is uncertain, that uncertainty has to be resolved before a fixing arrangement can be treated as ready.

More depth puts the stored weight farther from the wall. Choosing a deeper shelf is therefore not just adding surface area; it changes the demand at the connection. A neat-looking bracket cannot settle that on appearance alone.

The support comes first

Measured shelving / Zunbik
If the fixing point is unknown, the answer is not ready.
A workshop rule, not a load rating.

A photograph can show a shelf's shape. It cannot prove what the wall or the connection will carry.

Steel load sizing

Give the weight a location.

“Heavy-duty” is not a measurement. A useful brief says how much weight goes on each level and where the heaviest item sits.

An area figure is a question, not an answer.

As a planning example, a shelf 1,000 mm wide and 400 mm deep has an area of 0.4 square metres. An intended load of 40 kg gives 100 kg per square metre: 40 divided by 0.4. These are example inputs, not a Zunbik product specification or an offered load capacity.

The figure does not distinguish forty kilograms spread evenly from one forty-kilogram object at the front edge. It also says nothing about deflection, steel grade or fastener resistance. Use the sizing and load calculator to describe an intended use, not to choose a safe working load. Material thickness is useful context for the enquiry but is not part of that area formula.

Leave room for the way storage changes.

Tell us if the contents change seasonally or if a shelf that starts with light supplies will later hold dense stock. Do not add an arbitrary extra load and call it a safety factor. State the heaviest intended use clearly so that the assumptions can be checked. Moving a support or adding a level later changes the brief.

Freestanding storage avoids relying on a wall for every vertical load, but it brings its own questions. Floor unevenness, a tall narrow footprint and an unevenly loaded top shelf can affect stability. “Freestanding” does not mean that restraint is unnecessary.

From opening to written scope

Check the shelf before setting the schedule.

The work starts as an enquiry. Fabrication timing comes after the unresolved dimensions and support questions are identified, not from the day a message arrives.

How the review works
  1. Describe the storage run.

Send a dimensioned sketch, even a simple one, with units. Mark the available space and the clear openings you need. Note the intended load per level and any known wall or floor conditions.

  2. Resolve the support questions.

Zunbik reviews the brief and identifies what still needs checking. A proposed span may need another support, or a wall-mounted idea may need a different arrangement. Unverified fixing conditions stay visible in the discussion.

  3. Compare a defined scope.

The written scope ties dimensions to material, finish and fixing assumptions. Its price basis includes fabrication time. Confirm what is included in installation arrangements before comparing it with a supply-only alternative.

  4. Agree the next step.

Once the open points are settled, discuss timing and the route to the space. A shelf that fits its final recess must also pass through the entrance. An enquiry alone does not authorize work or reserve a date.

A small-workshop scope

For defined storage, not an assumed capacity.

This service suits a measured shelf or compact storage run where the intended contents can be described. It is not a rack selected by a certified load label, and this website does not supply structural approval. Zunbik will not promise a load from a photograph alone.

If a stock shelf already fits the space and comes with the verified specification your use requires, a custom piece may not be the useful choice. Where the problem is a narrow working surface rather than storage levels, look at compact workspace fixtures. For an open support assembly, use the small steel frames brief. An existing damaged shelf belongs under repair and alteration, not a new-build assumption.

Before you enquire

The questions that change the scope.

Custom steel shelving in Austin starts with practical choices. None of these answers replaces a check of the actual location.

Can you quote from a photograph?

A photograph can start the discussion, but it does not establish the wall construction or a shelf's safe load. A written quote follows review of dimensions, material, finish and fixing conditions.

A wide view is often more useful than a close crop. Include the floor junction and obstructions so that the first discussion is about the whole storage location.

Is freestanding shelving the answer if the wall is unknown?

It may be an option, not an automatic solution. Floor conditions, the height-to-depth relationship and the way items are loaded still need review. A freestanding piece may need restraint.

Does the load calculator tell me what a shelf can carry?

No. It divides an intended load by the planned shelf area. The result is a screening figure for an enquiry, not a safe working load, structural calculation or certification.

Can you work to a move-in date?

Include the date with the enquiry. Timing is discussed after the dimensions and fixing conditions are checked; submitting a request does not reserve fabrication or installation time.
